Greening the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region

Together with De Groene Stelling, we are working towards a greener and more biodiverse landscape in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam. Over the coming years, we will be planting trees to improve the climate, enhance biodiversity, and promote a healthy living environment close to the city.

A green and biodiverse landscape around Amsterdam

Trees for All is partnering with De Groene Stelling to create a greener, more biodiverse environment in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam. In this expansive 25,000-hectare region — surrounding cities such as Haarlem, Amsterdam, and Purmerend — we will be planting thousands of trees and shrubs in the coming years.

We support various local projects in this area by planting forests and landscape elements such as hedgerows, avenue trees, food forests, and farmyard vegetation. Trees and shrubs play a vital role: they boost biodiversity, capture CO2, provide cooling, and contribute to a peaceful, green environment — right next to the city.

Our goal: 75,000 trees and shrubs in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region. Would you like to help green Amsterdam’s surroundings? Join us and plant a tree!

The Metropolitan Region Amsterdam faces major challenges. The climate is changing and the quality of nature and water is declining. Biodiversity is under pressure. At the same time, more housing is needed, and the national Forest Strategy calls for more forest. Farmers are struggling, and residents are looking for green spaces to relax.

That’s why De Groene Stelling is taking action: a collaboration between residents, farmers, businesses, and civil society organizations. Together, we aim to create a future-proof landscape — with space for nature, sustainable agriculture, recreation, and climate solutions.

Our contribution? We will plant 75,000 trees and shrubs in and around Amsterdam in the coming years. This will boost biodiversity, store CO2, and help create a greener, more beautiful environment for both people and wildlife.

At various locations, we plant native species in the form of forests, avenue trees, hedgerows, and tree walls. These green additions help restore the landscape, strengthen nature, and create nice places for residents to walk, cycle and enjoy being outdoors.

Amsterdam birthday forest

For one day, we’re transforming the A10 highway into a green oasis together with De Gezonde Stad. On 21 June, a unique forest will appear here with 750 large trees and 7,500 small ones — a green gift to celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. Best of all? After the event, all the trees will be given a permanent home in and around the city.

Farmyard planting Amstelland

Eighteen dairy farmers in Amstelland — the rural area just south of Amsterdam — have planted 3,228 trees and shrubs around their farmyards. These farmers are part of the local dairy collective Boeren van Amstel. In the coming years, this project will be further expanded.

Water, Land & Dijken

vlinder sleedoorn

Together with the agricultural collective Water, Land & Dijken, we are enhancing biodiversity on farms across the region. At seven participating farms, we are developing tailored planting plans to add more greenery that suits the farmer’s needs and the local biodiversity.

Where will we be planting?

We are planting trees around the historic Defence Line of Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trees will be located throughout the vast, green, rural area of 25,000 hectares stretching from Purmerend, Zaanstad, Beverwijk, Velsen, Haarlem, Hoofddorp, Aalsmeer, and Amstelveen to Amsterdam — the western section of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

Besides Trees for All, partners in De Groene Stelling include: Wilder Land, Urgenda, Boeren van Amstel, Agricultural Collective North Holland South, Anna’s Hoeve, Fortwachter Penningsveer, Local2Local, Natuurmonumenten, Staatsbosbeheer, Pakhuis de Zwijger, Rabobank, and ANWB.

Each of these organizations contributes in their own way. For example, ANWB will develop new hiking and cycling routes, and Boeren van Amstel will promote local dairy production.
