Scotland

Together with our partners in Scotland, we are committed to restoring riparian zones in Glen Prosen. We are planting trees along rivers to make the environment stronger, more diverse and climate-resilient.

Status: Current project

Restoring the landscape and riparian zones with trees

Glen Prosen is a beautiful valley in eastern Scotland. Much of the natural environment has disappeared over the years, leaving a barren landscape increasingly unable to cope with the effects of climate change. Natural regeneration is also limited due to grazing by deer and roe deer.

This is clearly visible along the rivers flowing through the valley. Due to the lack of trees and shade, the water temperature is rising. As a result, species such as the Atlantic salmon are struggling to survive.

Together with our partners, we are kick-starting nature’s recovery. We are planting 12,700 trees and shrubs in the riparian zones along the river that flows through the valley. This planting will provide shade, improve water quality and help prevent erosion. In addition, it creates a more varied landscape that supports a wide range of birds, insects, and mammals.

Why Glen Prosen needs more trees

Trees are essential for restoring nature in Glen Prosen. They not only enhance the landscape, but also improve water quality and create more space for plants and animals.

  • Trees help create a strong, fertile soil that absorbs water and nutrients more effectively. They also filter harmful substances, preventing them from entering the river as easily.
  • Leaves, fruits, and seeds that end up in the river form an important food source for fungi, bacteria, aquatic insects, fish and birds. In this way, trees support the local food chain in this area.
  • The trees along the river provide shade, keeping the water cooler. This is essential for species such as the Atlantic salmon. In addition, roots, branches, and fallen trunks create shelter and breeding grounds for fish, dragonflies and other animals.
  • Tree roots help prevent erosion. During heavy rainfall, trees and shrubs slow down the waterflow, allowing it to infiltrate the soil more effectively and reducing the risk of flooding.

Our approach

Trees for All enables the planting of native tree and shrub species that naturally occur in this area. These include alder, silver birch, various willow species, rowan, aspen, hazel and wild cherry. To protect the young trees from grazing deer and roe deer, fencing is placed around the planting areas. This gives the trees the chance to grow into a natural and rewilded landscape.

The planting is part of a broader approach to encouraging landscape rewilding. The idea is that, over the next 50 years, the rivers will be lined with trees. Species such as alder and willow will grow along the banks. Varied woodland areas, including birch and hazel, will develop on the slopes. Open spaces, such as wet grasslands, will remain between these wooded areas. This variation provides habitats for a wide range of species: from red squirrels and woodland flowers to countless insects.

Examples of hedges and trees, of which we are set to see many more in this area in the future.

We are planting trees in Glen Prosen, a valley in the east of Scotland.

Onze partners

Several partners are involved in the realisation of this project:

  • Sylva Nova: a forest management and consultancy organisation dedicated to the sustainable management, restoration and expansion of European forests. Its expertise focuses on sustainable forest management, reforestation, landscape restoration, as well as engineering, consultancy and research.
  • Forest and Land Scotland: manages Scotland’s national forests and land. The organisation is committed to visitor experience, as well as to the protection of wildlife, nature and habitats. Through this project, the organisation aims to position Glen Prosen as a leading initiative in restoration and education.
  • The Alba Explorers: Centre for Outdoor Innovation (CIC): focuses on environmental education, skills for future jobs and biodiversity projects by connecting children and youth with nature.

This project is made possible in part by a donation from Hotels for Trees.
