They store the carbon (C) in their trunk, roots and branches and release the oxygen (O2) into the atmosphere. It\u2019s no coincidence that trees are known as \u2018the lungs of the earth\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount of carbon sequestered by a tree depends on its species, location and age. The same goes for the amount of oxygen it produces. Roughly, we can say that one mature tree produces <strong>100 kilos of oxygen<\/strong> a year. And it\u2019s also thanks to trees that we can breathe in clean air, as they filter pollutants like particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from the air.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1334\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/treesforall.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bos-Nederland-Epe-e1719389547661.jpg\" alt=\"bos-epe\" class=\"wp-image-26655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treesforall.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bos-Nederland-Epe-e1719389547661.jpg 1334w, https:\/\/treesforall.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bos-Nederland-Epe-e1719389547661-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treesforall.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bos-Nederland-Epe-e1719389547661-1024x629.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/treesforall.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bos-Nederland-Epe-e1719389547661-768x472.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1334px) 100vw, 1334px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Trees reduce temperatures<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another unique characteristic of trees is that they act as natural air conditioners.\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/edepot.wur.nl\/351459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wageningen University<\/a>\u202fcalculated that on a sunny day one tree has the same cooling capacity as <strong>ten air conditioning units<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is because trees create shade, as well as cooling the air through evaporation: the process by which water evaporates from the leaves and removes heat from the air. So, planting trees is a natural solution for combatting heat stress in cities, for example. Trees play a special role in this, as they help prevent both flooding and drought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their leaves and branches collect rainwater and retain it temporarily. So, they reduce the force of a downpour and water doesn\u2019t run off immediately. An average mature tree in the city can retain between <strong>200 and 400 litres of water<\/strong>\u202fin its crown, according to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/edepot.wur.nl\/460541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wageningen University &amp; Research<\/a>. \u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even more importantly, trees contribute to <strong>healthy and aerated soil conditions<\/strong>, which ensure that water can infiltrate the ground better \u2013 acting like a sort of natural sponge. This prevents precious water washing away over the land or through the sewers. Trees improve biodiversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees and forests provide<strong> food, shelter and habitats<\/strong> for millions of plants, animals and other organisms: from birds and insects to fungi and bacteria. This variation in all living things is known as biodiversity. Did you know, for instance, that a single native common oak is home to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/nl\/show\/de-ene-boom-is-de-andere-niet.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">400 species of insects<\/a>? And that\u2019s not even counting all the other creatures that live in and around a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biodiversity ensures strong ecosystems, which are areas where <strong>plants and animals <\/strong>form a whole with their habitat, all working together in harmony. In healthy ecosystems, carbon is sequestered better, the soil is more fertile, water is retained better and nature can deal better with extreme conditions like drought and heat. Healthy ecosystems also recover more quickly after a disruption. Conversely, therefore, deforestation also has&nbsp;great consequences&nbsp;for the climate and our living conditions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Release of CO2.\u202f<\/strong>Trees store carbon in their branches, trunks and roots. If the forest disappears, then that carbon is released into the atmosphere, which reinforces the greenhouse effect and accelerates global warming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soil disturbance.<\/strong> The forest floor is damaged by deforestation. With no tree roots to hold the soil together, fertile soil or water washes away more quickly, due to rain and wind (i.e. erosion). This means that the soil can store less water and CO2.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loss of oxygen production.<\/strong> Trees convert CO2 into oxygen. So fewer trees means less oxygen for plants, wildlife and people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Less biodiversity. <\/strong>Deforestation deprives all sorts of plants and wildlife of their habitat. This weakens all the ecosystems that actually help regulate the climate, healthy soil conditions and water availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major<strong> causes of deforestation<\/strong> are agriculture, livestock farming, forest fires and the building of infrastructure. Besides planting new forests, other important steps in tackling climate change are the prevention of deforestation and the protection of existing forests. That\u2019s why we pay a great deal of attention to these points in our projects. Take, for instance, the way we plant trees in combination with sustainable forms of agriculture, fire prevention and forest protection.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-g2p-wrapper  has-secondary-background-color\" id=\"solution\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-502b221ed98017dd4f1a1ab9bbee3b5d\">Are trees the solution to the climate problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-055a41ae5863dd0ff508492b3cb2d89e wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change cannot be stopped by trees alone. However, their versatility does make them a powerful part of the solution. They create a more stable climate, increase biodiversity, improve air quality and protect against extreme weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e000446cf0d98cd26a7eda83ac2a1f86 wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, it\u2019s important that we drastically reduce emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases, in order to combat further global warming. And all of us \u2013 governments, businesses and individuals \u2013 can play a part in this. From making conscious choices in energy, production or recycling to eating more plant-based food and travelling less by plane and car: every step counts. It\u2019s crucial that <strong>the right tree grows in the right place<\/strong>, so that the trees have real added value for the local surroundings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We therefore plant as many native and local species of trees as possible; species that occur naturally in a region or have been growing there for many years. We also pay attention to species that suit the changing global climate. And last but not least, we ensure that the trees we plant are managed and protected well.
